특수한 전치사 except - 《영어 문장의 체계》68p

 

except는 일반적인 전치사와 달리 명사 이외의 품사를 목적어로 가질 수 있습니다. - 《영어 문장의 체계》 68p

 

영영사전에는 except가 격식체에서 동사로 사용될 수 있다고 되어 있습니다. 드물게 신문에서 변화형 excepts, excepted, excepting 등으로 사용되고, 회화에서 관용 표현으로 present company excepted가 사용되기도 합니다. 하지만 except를 동사로 쓰기보다는 exclude를 쓰는 것이 보통입니다(특히 미국).

High technology equipment would be excepted from any trade agreement.
→ High technology equipment would be excluded from any trade agreement.
(첨단 기술 설비는 무역 협정에서 제외될 것이다.)

Children under five are excepted from the survey.
→ Children under five are excluded from the survey.
(5세 이하의 어린이는 그 조사에서 제외된다.)

Tours are arranged all year round (January excepted).
→ Tours are arranged all year round except January. (전치사)
→ Tours are arranged all year round excluding January.
(관광은 연중 운영됩니다(1월은 제외).)

Sarah excepted, the whole group came to the party.
(사라를 제외하고 모두 파티에 왔다.)

present company excepted
여기 있는 사람들[계신 분들]은 제외하고(비판적인 말을 한 후에, 같이 있는 사람들을 보고 하는 말은 아니라는 뜻으로 덧붙이는 말) - 옥스포드 영한사전
→ present company excluded

사전에는 present company excepted가 나오지만, 회화 상에서 실제로는 present company excluded가 사용됩니다. 지금 하는 말이 여기 있는 사람에게 해당되는 것은 아니라고 말할 때 쓰는 표현입니다. 그러나 이 표현을 쓴다고 해서 비판이 비판이 아닌게 되는 것은 아니므로 주의해서 사용해야 합니다. 사전의 설명처럼 꼭 누군가를 비판하는 상황에서만 사용되는 것은 아닙니다.

She is one of the bravest people I know, present company excluded, of course.
(그 여자는 내가 아는 사람들 중 가장 용감한 사람이다. 물론, 여기 있는 사람은 빼고.)
: 여기 있는 사람들 빼고 내가 아는 사람들 중에 그 여자가 가장 용감하다. 여기 있는 사람들이 용감하지 않다는 뜻은 아니다.
It doesn’t mean that you’re saying the people who are currently with you aren’t brave.

A: They said that we weren't supposed to tell anyone where we were going.
    (그들은 우리가 가고 있는 곳을 누구에게도 말해서는 안 된다고 했어.)
B: Present company excluded, obviously.
    (여기 있는 사람은 빼고 말이지.)

 

except의 특이한 정체성

 

except는 동사로 잘 쓰이지 않지만 명사형 exception(예외)과 형용사형 exceptional(이례적일 정도로 우수한), 부사형 exceptionally(유난히)가 있습니다. 

Try to specify the necessary and sufficient condition for something qualifying as art and you’ll always find an exception to your criteria. - 2020년 고3 7월 학평(인천) 영어 32번

Ludwig van Beethoven’s famous Fifth Symphony provides an exceptional example of how much mileage a classical composer can get out of a few notes and a simple rhythmic tapping. - 2022년 고3 6월 평가원 영어 34번

The fact is that successfully changing long-term user habits is exceptionally rare. - 2021년 고3 3월 학평(서울) 영어 21번

except는 드물게 동사로 쓰이기도 하기 때문에 전치사로 쓰일 때 다른 전치사들과 다른 특징이 있다고 볼 수 있습니다. 

 

수능 지문의 예

 

except는 다른 전치사와 마찬가지로 뒤에 명사(구)를 목적어로 가지지만, 흔히 'except for'가 하나의 전치사처럼 쓰입니다. 또 in/to/on/with 등이 이끄는 전치사구, that, when 등이 이끄는 명사절이 except 뒤에 오기도 합니다. except 뒤에 명사절이 올 때는 except를 접속사로 볼 수 있습니다.

 

In such conditions, states could gain little by cooperating with each other ─ except in temporary military alliances or security agreements that could fall apart at a moment’s notice. - 2021년 고3 10월 학평(서울) 영어 35번

On the other hand, Japanese tend to do little disclosing about themselves to others except to the few people with whom they are very close. - 2020년 고1 3월 학평(서울) 영어 35번

Sayers had never had a close relationship with any white man before, except with George Halas, the head coach of the Bears. - 2021년 고3 7월 학평(인천) 영어 43번

Philosopher Thomas Nagel argued that there is no “view from nowhere,” since we can not see the world except from a particular perspective, and that perspective influences what we see. - 2022년 고3 6월 평가원 영어 21번
